Snapshots are a genuinely useful feature and worth enabling. They let you roll back accidental edits or deletions quickly, without needing to restore from a separate system. But snapshots live on the same device as your primary data. If the NAS is stolen, destroyed by fire, or suffers a hardware failure severe enough to take the volume down, the snapshots are gone along with the data. For ransomware, the concern is more direct: an attacker or ransomware with administrative access to the NAS can delete or disable snapshots before or during encryption. Snapshots on the same device, reachable over the same network, are not an independent copy. They are a fast-rollback tool for ordinary mistakes, not a recovery path for serious incidents.
RAID inside a NAS protects against a hard drive inside the NAS failing. That is worth having because it keeps the device online through a hardware failure without data loss in that moment. But RAID mirrors every change continuously, which means it also mirrors every deletion, every ransomware encryption, and every accidental overwrite. It provides availability, not backup. Sync tools mirror the current state of files from one location to another. When you delete a file on a workstation, the sync deletes it on the NAS. When ransomware encrypts files on a workstation, the sync propagates those encrypted files to the NAS, often before you know anything is wrong. Sync is useful for keeping files consistent across devices and accessible centrally. It is not a backup because it does not maintain an independent copy of an earlier state.
